Words Their Way Shout Out!

Hey! I am just giving a shout out to all of you who do Words Their Way.

My grade level team had a fabulous planning meeting today, & have lots of exciting plans & changes for next year. One of them is we are going to start doing Words Their Way in place of what we are doing now for spelling.
I am looking for your advice & suggestions! I have lots of questions:
  • What does WtW look in your room? How do you facilitate multiple groups within the day/week?
  • What resources do you use? Do you have the teacher kit? Are there components we MUST have?
  • What does your homework look like?
  • Do you have any helpful hints or suggestions?
Thanks to all for participating. I appreciate any suggestions you have--no matter how small or big!

  1. We used to use WTW, but actually just got rid of it after 3 years, since spelling is addressed in Storytown.

In our building, tho, we did the beginning of the year assessment and then put ALL of the first graders into a spreadsheet. We then split the kids into 3 or 4 groups (depending on how many teachers we had) and traveled to another classroom for WTW time. This way, each teacher only had to plan one lesson and each kiddo was being taught on their level!

We had the CD and the classroom set of books (6 of each title, one title per lesson). Honestly, the books are a joke - they're TOO easy for our kiddos! I like to see things more meaty. The poetry book was entertaining, though!

OH! And every Day 5, we played a Jeopardy game that was created through Power Point to review the spellings of the week.

Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to share what we used to do! :) Good luck!

  2. No apologies necessary! I appreciate the info! I wasn't aware there was a poetry book. I assume that is seperate from the student book?

We are planning to get K, A, B, & C. Did you have/use all of those & it was still too easy?

Did you add any other activities/games other than Jeopardy?
    Thanks again for your response!

  3. I know this is way late, but I am considering doing WTW this year more (I have used the sorts and assessment in the past) and came across this post. I currently use Fountas and Pinnell for spelling, but want to incorporate more WTW. Have you come up with a plan? If so - what are you thinking of doing for your weekly plan? and how are you planning on differentiating? Clearly I have lots of questions!!
