The Book Whisperer -- Surveys

Do you survey your kiddos to find out what their interests are so that you can guide them to books they'll love? It's a quick an easy way to help you lead your students to being lifelong readers!

As Donalyn Miller  says in her book, "[s]tudents may not be able to describe what types of books they might like to read, but if I have knowledge of their personal interests, I will be able to find books that match a topic they enjoy."

She has a couple of great surveys in her book, but they are more geared towards intermediate students. I re-worked them to create a survey that would work with my firsties. Hope you find it useful in your classroom!

  1. Thank you! I liked the survey idea, but didn't have a concrete plan for my kinders. Maybe I'll use this as a home project, too!

  5. Thank you so much for making this survey! It is VERY 1st grade savvy! I wanted to make one but yours is so great - I will use it! I love the pictures where they can choose the kind of book they like to read- OR draw their own! Some of those surveys (well, ALL) in the book I was thinking "beginning of the year there is no way I am going to get sentences or anything I can READ out of them!" Thanks again!
