Have you heard the BIG NEWS?!
Laney Sammons, author of Guided Math,
will be participating in a Q & A session with us!
So far, these questions are going to be addressed:
- What ideas do you have when independent practice students have not finished their expected work (this is when all students are changing to the next math rotation, teacher starts with a new Math group)?
- How do you recommend dealing with student absences, particularly those who are already struggling?
- How do you incorporate the math curriculum the school uses and the Guided Math concept ? I struggle trying to figure out how to make all the components work from Guided Math and still have students complete the required math pages from the curriculum each day.
- What resources do you recommend for finding the "just right" materials for math workshop activities? Do you have a favorite?
What other questions do you have?
Make sure you leave it down in the comments so I can pass it on to Laney.
Chapter 6 is all about supporting Guided Math with Math Workshop.

A couple of my reflections on this chapter:
Do I use only the BEST tasks for workstations? Laney lists these:
Do I use only the BEST tasks for workstations? Laney lists these:
- review of previously mastered concepts CHECK!
- practice for math fact automaticity CHECK!
- mathematical games to reinforce concepts CHECK!
- practice problem solving not so much
- investigate mathematical concepts CHECK!
- write in Math Journals not yet
- computer-related work CHECK!
- math-related work from other subject areas nope
- work from small-group instruction CHECK!
Start out small-group by having the children practice math facts. This is just brilliant! So simple...but brilliant! While the kiddos are practicing their math facts, you have time to check in with other kiddos & put out little fires (fires? there are fires? There are always little issues that come up). Having the small group engaged with practice is just a nice way to transition. SO going to do that next year!
What questions would YOU like to ask Laney?
Add them in the comments!
Thank you for all the great ideas through your blogs with this Guided Math Study! I am learning a great deal and am psyched about making some changes next year.
ReplyDeleteMy question is - I teach sixth grade math in a traditional setting - I have a 53 minute period for each class. How do I manage this time period for guided math? Any tips would be appreciated!
I've just read chapter 7 and am wondering how to do this and still get in the small group instruction; is it done at a different time?

Math is Elementary
I agree...one thing at a time. Even though we want to start everything at once :)
ReplyDeleteWhat if we address the "Math-related work from other subject areas" component with the "Mathematical current events" component found in chapter 3? I'm thinking of using some of the stretches found in this chapter as part of workshops. It would be very easy to add newspaper articles and tie it in.
I loved reading your thoughts!

One Class, One Sound
Let me just say I am SOOO sad that I JUST found your blog! I am really diving HEAD first into making my classroom COMPLETELY workshop based. AHH!!! Looks like I have some catching up to do and a book to buy!
ReplyDeleteNo worries! Just head to the Guided Math Book Study page (the tab is up at the top)...& follow along! It'll all be waiting for you!
ReplyDeleteYou'll LOVE doing everything in the workshop framework. I dove in a couple years ago with Reading & Writing & kind of slowly progressed on to math. LOVE it!
Question for Laney:
ReplyDeleteI teach a mixed 5th / 6th grade math class which is considered a Tier 2 intervention group. As with any class, there are a variety of developmental levels within these groups, and I have 2 different grade level curriculums to teach. I KNOW that guided math is going to be the answer to help me meet the needs of my students, but I'm not sure how to pull it all together in only 70 minutes. What guidance or suggestions can you give me?
Thanks, Meiriwyn
I am ashamed to say that I only skimmed and scanned through all of the guided math posts (My wrist is rather wore out from being on the computer so much this week.) Anywho, have you already been using guided math with EDM? I am going to start it this year and just wanted to know more thoughts about EDM and guided math. Here is a link to my blog about my plan of attack for guided math with EDM: http://who-is-on-first.blogspot.com/2012/07/my-plan-of-attack-math.html
ReplyDeleteLet me know your thoughts :-)
